Connecting remotely through the internet is often the least expensive way for businesses to connect. It does however bring with it some security concerns that must be evaluated prior to implementation. VPN has security options such as ones that require the remote user to have a software key loaded on their computer which authenticates that user as one who should be given access. There are other security measures done with hardware devices and even fingerprint identification. VPN is often used with Citrix Metaframe (link to thin client page) solutions to allow software applications to be run on lower speed and connections that fluctuate in bandwidth.
